The Environment

Nick Stern’s recent report (see report here) has brought to the fore the whole issue of when to start taking action…and it’s now. FQRA wants to help you take the first steps to making a real difference. Here are some of the things you could be doing:

Recycling in Ferry Quays:

Currently every block has facilities to recycle:

  • Glass
  • Paper – newspapers, magazines,
  • Cardboard – please fold
  • Metal Cans

These bins are currently underutilised. Please feel free to make use of them. Should they become too full, the FQRA will make plans to recuperate more.

More Recycling Near-by: (Sommerfield):

  • Plastic
  • Clothes
  • Batteries

Some Hints and Tips:

Here is a small checklist of additional simple things you can do to help the environment (and your wallet):

ü      Bulbs: Where possible use low-wattage or energy saving bulbs

ü      Computers/TVs: If you have a computer with many peripherals, get multi-plug boards with individual on/off switches as that will allow you to turn anything off that is not necessary. The same applies for TVs and VCRs/DVDs.

ü      Standby: Do not leave your appliances on standby. Many appliances still use up to 80% of the energy on standby mode.

ü      Heating: Lower your heating by 1-2 degrees. You will hardly notice it but the environment will

ü      Carrier Bags: purchase re-usable cloth bags for your shopping. Plastic bags are not bio-degradable and just go into land-fill sites.
